What Are The Best Flip-Flops?

TOP 5 FLIP-FLOPS

Some of the best flip-flops I have ever owned can be found below… Just do me one favour…. please don’t do the standard travelling thing and decided not too buy them because they are slightly on the expensive side.

I promise, promise, promise you a good pair of flip-flops are worth their weight in gold!

I don’t know about you but every time I buy a pair of cheap flip-flops they are guaranteed to break within 5 weeks. WORST OF ALL they always manage to break at the cruellest possible moment. One pair of these so called ‘cheap’ flip-flops broke, as I was tightrope walking along a wall to avoid an overflowing sewer drain in Cambodia. Can you guess what happened next?

Yeap, that’s right. My flip-flops broke and I fell head first into the dirty, grimy sewer water. It wasn’t my proudest moment but it definitely was my smelliest!

So on with my top 5 flip-flop brands in descending order.

1. Rainbows

God save our precious Rainbow flip-flops! Original hand made in a Laguna Beach garage (California, USA) in 1974 by a guy called Jay Longley these flip-flops are still THE Californian flip-flop. These amazing flip-flops still come with a guarantee that if they break before they should you get a brand new pair. These beauties have been my brand for the past 10 years – ever since I bought my first one in San Diego!

2. Havaianas

Well… what can I say about Havaianas? If you’ve ever travelled before you will definitely have seen other backpackers wearing them. People swear by Havaianas so they can’t all be wrong. They are cheap, light, easy, good-looking and more importantly durable. My mate Johnny swears by them and I trust him implicitly.

3. Ipanemas

These flip-flops make me laugh – they are 100% a total rip off of Havaianas. So much so that in the beginning I refused to buy them because they looked like fake Havai’s. But alas – I was wrong. These are in fact a kosher brand of flip-flop that are as comfortable, if not more, than Havianas. They’re also cheaper which is an added bonus!

4. Reefs

These flip-flops are bigger than Havai’s and Rainbow’s… but man, oh man are they comfy! Some designs make you look like a 40-year-old geography teacher but when Reef gets the design right they really pull it out of the bag! It’s also been my experience that these flip-flops are indestructible so if you actually are lucky enough to find a style that makes you look good buy at least 4 pairs! You’ll thank me for this nugget of information!

5. Crocs

Hmmm… I debated about putting these in because, lets face it, they are not what I consider as cool and good looking flips-flops like Havi’s or Rainbows. However… ever single medical nurse I have ever seen or met wear them. When asked why, they simply answer that they are the most comfortable footwear you can ever wear, especially when you have to be on your feet for 13 hours straight. Now backpackers walk around a lot and stand a lot so naturally these would be an ideal choice. To try or not to try that is the question… maybe next year 😉

There are no such things as “other” flip flops. Rainbows are all that exist.

I totally agree with you Graham. Rainbow flip-flops rule my world! I think I may make a trip to California next year as an excuse to buy some more 😉

I love Birkenstocks too… the only problem with them is that when they get wet they get pretty rank!

Ha! I totally agree with you that Havaiana’s are a great pair of flip-flops. But once you try a pair of Rainbows I promise you, you won’t go back!

I will go for havaianas. It is comfortable to my feet and you can choose from their wide selections of designs.

Dino – You are the second person to give Havaianas the ‘two thumbs up’! I think I may have to run a poll of what brand people love the most in a few weeks time!

Personally I believe Havaianas to be the best rubber thong flipflop in the world. Over the last 15 years since I discovered Havaianas I have bought over 30 pairs in different colors and styles most of which I still have. I wear rubber thongs every day of my life and have since about 1970. For work or play, casual or dress, rain or shine, I am barefoot and wearing thongs. I have found nothing yet that can compare to the comfort, style, price, and durability of Havaianas. I highly recommend them to anyone who loves flipflops.

    Hi all,
Have owned a lot of flip flops my take
Havaiana’s – average to not good, just paying for a brand that every body wears, not much support. Also if you have a slim thickness foot they will be lose.

Reef is fantastic, arounder, much better quality then havaiana’s.
Few other brands that I came across was travelling was rider , these are super soft and really nice fit, walked around in these for months.
but the cream of the crope easily goes to:olukai ohana. they are the best by far, considerably better then croc’s easliy. very well made.
